April 25--Algae is winning the battle in the small pond, barely any in the large one. And I've got a bud on a water lily, earliest ever in the years I've had the ponds. The fish are wanting food every morning now, water irises will bloom within 10 days.More watergarden journal.

Koi and goldfish will jump out of your pond if the sides aren't high enough. One day, my 12 lb guard dog brought me a 1 ½ lb. koi. Now I know Buzzer isn't that good of a fisherman, and besides, I've seen them jump out. They don't mean to, they just get carried away with their jumping.

That's just one of the things you'll need to consider if you're thinking about building a pond. The big items to consider are how much you want to spend, how big you want your pond to be, where you'll put it, and how much time you want to devote to building and maintaining it.

Now as tempting as it might be, you probably don't want to put your pond in the lowest place in your yard, where the yard will drain into it, because you need to keep dirt and debris out of the pond or you just might become an algae factor. And you want it to have some sun, and you probably don't want to put it where all the leaves will fall into it when they come off the trees. As to size, the location will help determine that, as well as your budget. The bigger the pond, the more it will cost you for liner materials, and the bigger the pump and filters you'll need, and the more plants and fish you'll want to put into it. Also, a bigger pond will take more work to build, more landscaping, and more time for maintenance.

So spend some time budgeting, check prices for the materials you'll need, and spend some time staring at your yard and visualizing. We have links to some excellent sources of information and supplies for ponds, check them out and start planning!
